Metal workshop: workbenches with vices
Your path in modules.
The trade is divided into eight building blocks. Module 3 is one of them, not yet a vocational qualification.
Before · 3 months
Making parts by hand and with simple machines
You read drawings, saw, drill, countersink and ream. Then you check the parts with measuring tools.
Before · 3 months
Joining parts into assemblies
You join parts with fixed or detachable connections and check that everything fits and works.
This course · 6 months
Making parts with machines
You set up lathes and milling machines, make parts and check them. You spend one month of it in a company; at the end comes the IHK competence assessment.
After · 6 months
Making assemblies with controls
You build mechanical assemblies with control technology and put them into operation.
After · 6 months
Building and testing automated systems
You install automated systems, put them into operation and monitor them.
After · 6 months
Assembling and commissioning technical systems
You assemble larger systems as a team, put them into operation, improve them and hand them over to the customer.
After · 6 months
Maintaining technical systems
You inspect, service and repair plants so that production runs without faults.
After · 6 months
Handling jobs with quality assurance
You plan larger jobs in your field and monitor the quality of products and processes.
Goal
External exam at the IHK
The IHK admits you to the exam if you show that you can do the job. If you pass, you have the skilled worker’s certificate.
How module 3 works.
Six months in two steps: first at BFI, then in a company.
5months
Theory and practice
Making parts on machines and maintaining machines.
1month
Work placement
You work in a company for one month.
Goal
Competence assessment, IHK
Plus a BFI certificate.

Module 3
You read technical drawings and put together the documents for a job. In the team you talk things through and resolve conflicts.
For example
You read all the dimensions of a part from the drawing before you make it.

18% of the whole course
You set up your workplace, plan the work steps and get tools and materials ready. At the end you check your result with test equipment.
For example
You measure a finished workpiece with a caliper and write down the result.

You learn the properties of materials such as steel and choose the right one for each part. Auxiliary materials such as oils and coolants are part of this too.
For example
You use the right coolant when drilling and dispose of it properly afterwards.

A piece of metal becomes a component. You work by hand and on machines: you drill, turn and mill, and join the parts into assemblies.
For example
You clamp a workpiece in the lathe, turn it to size and check it.

Machines and tools last longer when they are looked after. You inspect them regularly, clean and lubricate them and replace damaged parts.
For example
You top up the oil on a machine, check the cables for damage and log the maintenance.

You pass on to customers the information that belongs to their job and clarify open questions.
For example
You tell the customer what they need to know about their job, such as the delivery date.

You assemble and dismantle assemblies according to plans. You also set up machines for new jobs.
For example
On the milling machine you change the clamping device and the tool for a new part.

When a machine stops, you find out why. You narrow down the fault, fix it and check the safety devices.
For example
A plant reports a fault. You look for the cause, replace the defective part and check that the plant runs safely again.

You learn how a job runs in a company: from agreeing it with the customer to the handover. Along the way, you make sure the quality is right.
For example
You inspect parts according to an inspection plan, look for the cause of a defect and document everything.

- What it allows you to do
- You have building block 3 of 8 on the way to becoming an industrial mechanic. Partial qualifications open the way into work and to a vocational qualification, step by step.
- Good to know
- Only the external exam at the IHK gives you the vocational qualification. The IHK can admit you if you show that you can do the job.
