Preparatory course
How do I learn well? You practise study techniques for retraining, work with Word and Excel and prepare your application.
For example
You write your CV in Word and research which companies are looking for skilled workers.

17% of the whole course
You brush up on what you can already calculate and learn what retraining requires.
For example
You convert millimetres to metres and rearrange simple formulas.

In the metal workshop you work by hand and on machines: filing, drilling, cutting threads, turning and milling. At the end you measure whether the part is right. You learn the technical terms along the way.
For example
You drill a hole, cut a thread into it and check the size with a caliper.

You learn how current flows and build your first circuits yourself. With measuring instruments you check that the protective measures work. You learn the technical terms along the way.
For example
You install a lamp with a switch and measure whether everything is connected safely.

How you finish.
At the end you haveBFI certificateafter an exam at BFI
- Who assesses
- BFI holds the exam itself at the end. If you pass, you receive the BFI certificate.
- What it allows you to do
- You have the basics for technical retraining: metal, electrical work, maths, study techniques, and Word and Excel.
- Good to know
- The course is optional and not yet a vocational qualification.
From the classroom.
Metal and electrical in one piece.
A steel plate with holes and dimensions, with a first circuit on it: a switch and a lamp. You practise filing, drilling and measuring in the metal workshop. In the electrical part you build your first circuits yourself.

Try it yourself.
In the metal workshop you measure with a vernier caliper, accurate to 0.05 mm. Measure the bolt.
- 1Slide the movable jaw up to the bolt.
- 2Read the whole millimetres: which mark at the top is just before the zero of the vernier?
- 3Find the vernier line that lines up exactly with a mark at the top. Each vernier line counts 0.05 mm.
Vernier caliper with a 1/20 vernier: 20 divisions over 39 mm, reading to 0.05 mm. Standard for callipers: DIN EN ISO 13385-1.

Where you learn.
This is where you prepare for your retraining. Take a look at the rooms in 3D before your first day.
